Opus I
In 1978 Robert Mondavi was visiting Baron Philippe Rothschild as his famous Bordeaux winery, Mouton Rothschild. Mouton is a "First Growth" winery, which basically means it is one of the "best-of-the-best." Of course Robert Mondavi is considered one of the "best-of-the-best" in the world in regards to California Cabernet. These two winemakers decided to try a collaborative effort between the two wineries. They agreed to locate the winery in Napa, California and use Napa Valley grapes. The winemaker would be from Mouton (French) and he would blend the wine in a traditional Bordeaux style. The new wine was named "OPUS I." Immediately this wine was designated as "world class" and the demand has continued to be very high. Because demand is high it is often very difficult for restaurants, wine shops and liquor stores to get this highly valued wine. We here at Liquor & Wine Cellar have been able to secure 12 bottles of the 2003 vintage. The price is significant ($153) but it is a rare offering that simply is not carried everywhere. If you have a boss, employee, or a good friend who enjoys fine wine, then OPUS I might be the perfect Holiday gift. Even better... get one for yourself and share it.
Again, we only have 12 bottles of this extraordinary wine so we know the supply will not last.
